Where should I start?

With how suction actually works, if you want to understand why the numbers on the box tell you so little. With the suction loss triage tool, if you have a machine in front of you that has stopped picking up properly. The second is faster and costs nothing, and most people find their answer within the first three checks.

Do I need tools for any of this?

A screwdriver and a ruler cover almost all of it. A coin tests a hose for blockages, a straight edge tells you whether a brush roll is worn, and a kitchen timer is all a battery test needs. The one job that benefits from anything more is fitting a belt, and even that is usually finger work.

Is any of this dangerous?

The one thing to take seriously is power. Unplug a corded machine at the wall, or take the battery out of a cordless one, before your hand goes anywhere near a brush housing, because a thermal cutout resets on its own once the motor cools and the brush motor can restart without warning. Beyond that it is careful work rather than risky work.

Do these guides apply to shop vacuums?

No. This site covers household floor care only: robot, cordless stick, upright, canister and home wet dry machines. Shop vacuums and workshop dust collection are a different tool for a different job with different safety requirements, and nothing here should be applied to them.
